What To Do This Weekend

Long Beach, Long Island

As most New Yorkers will tell you, the thing to do in NYC during the summer is actually to get the hell out of NYC.  Whether it’s going on a weekend trip or just a quick outing to Long Island or the Jersey Shore, most people within the five boroughs do their best to get away from the smoldering concrete, underperforming air conditioning, and most of all the smell of one of the most densely populated areas in the world sweating profusely.

If you’re weekend escape brings you to Long Island, it’s usually to Jones Beach.  But as a native Long Islander, I would like to recommend an alternative…Long Beach.  I’m not going to lie, it will likely be just as crowded as Jones Beach, but there will be a lot more things to do while you’re down there.

Here’s a quick recommendation on what to do in Long Beach this weekend:

First off, get to the beach early.  Otherwise, you’re going end up closer to Beech St. (the first parallel road after the boardwalk) than the actual beach.  Spend the majority of the day lounging on the beach, after all that’s why you went down there in the first place.  Once you’ve had your fair share of the sun, head over to The Speakeasy on Beech St. between Georgia and Kentucky.  It’s got great food and a stellar beer selection, of which I recommend the Lighthouse Ale or the Delirium I.P.A.

From there, if you’re able to fight off the sun and food induced coma for a couple of hours, check out one of the other major bars on Beach Street.  If you’re looking for something a little more laid back maybe Beach House or Tiki Bar will be a good bet, but if you want something a little more active give Minnesota’s or The Inn a go.

Either way Long Beach will be well worth checking out this weekend!
