Vital Information (12-22-10)

In Music,Rich,Top Albums of 2010 List on December 22, 2010 by Two Barbers Tagged: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Top 20 Albums of 2010 (Part 3: Albums 6-10)

(10) Kele Okereke – The Boxer – The genius behind one of my favorite bands of all time (Bloc Party) used his solo debut to completely reverse the BP format.  Where BP was post punk indie rock filled with a touch of electro house, this album was electro house with a touch of post punk indie rock.  Even flipping styles around Okereke can do no wrong.

Standout Track: Unholy Thoughts, The New Rules

Recommended If You Like: Bloc Party, Boxer Rebellion

Purchase ‘The Boxer’ by Kele Okereke on iTunes – Download

(9) Freelance Whales – Weathervanes – Quirky indie rock with sugar based synth and melodies so innocent and poppy, Justin Bieber would probably call it soft.  Nevertheless the song Hannah was my most played song on iTunes for the past three months.

Standout Track: Hannah, Starring

Recommended If You Like: The Postal Service, The Limousines

Purchase ‘Weathervanes’ by Freelance Whales on iTunes – Download

(8) Foals- Total Life Forever – Foals is like a happy-go-lucky version of Yeasayer.  They’re indie and experimental but something in the vocals reminds me of the Fleet Foxes.  Either way, it’s a shame this album was slept on so hard this year.  Hopefully they’ll pull a Mumford & Sons and be able to find more success with it in its second year.

Standout Track: Blue Blood, Total Life Forever, Spanish Sahara

Recommended If You Like: Yeasayer, Bear Hands

Purchase ‘Total Life Forever’ by Foals on iTunes – Download

(7) Circa Survive – Blue Sky Noise – ‘Juturna’ blew my mind when it came out.  ‘On Letting Go’ did not.  ‘Blue Sky Noise’ is probably the most poppy out of the three, but it’s also the best.  I highly recommend checking these guys out live, Anthony Green is about as true to form of a front man as you’re going to find and somehow manages to be on point with that high-pitched growl even live (no easy task).

Standout Track: Imaginary Enemy, I Felt Free, Spirit of the Stairwell

Recommended If You Like: Saves The Day, Saosin, Coheed & Cambria

Purchase ‘Blue Sky Noise’ by Circa Survive on iTunes – Download

(6) Kid Cudi – Man On The Moon II: Legend of Mr. Rager – Don’t let the shittiness of the title dissuade you, this album is amazing.  I don’t care what anyone says Kudi is the most innovative mind in Hip Hop right now.

Standout Track: Maniac, Ashin Kusher

Recommended If You Like: Kanye West, Mos Def, Talib Kweli

Purchase ‘Man on the Moon II’ by KId Cudi on iTunes – Download

Honorable Mention: Eminem – Recovery – for reasoning please see my previous post on why this album was so important here.

Vital Information Part Deux (12-16-10)

In Rich,Top Albums of 2010 List on December 16, 2010 by Two Barbers Tagged: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Top 20 Albums of 2010 (Part II: Albums 15-11)

In lieu of a ‘What To Do This Weekend’ post, I’ve decided to press on with my best albums of 2010 list.  I tend to suffer from blogger procrastination so if I don’t keep it going I might end up finishing the list in 2011, at which point we all know I should have started preparing for the ‘Best of 2011’ list by then…

Sit back pour some hot cocoa or eggnog or a white russian if that’s how you get down, and start looking into these records!

(15) Gaslight Anthem – American Slang – Sounds like Bruce Springsteen fronting the Bouncing Souls.  What a surprise they’re from jersey!

Standout Track: The Boxer, We Did It When We Were Young, Stay Lucky

Recommended If You Like: New Jersey, Bouncing Souls, Bruce Springsteen, Airborne Toxic Event

Purchase ‘American Slang’ by Gaslight Anthem on iTunes – Download

(14) Rogue Wave – Permalight – Peppy indie shoe-gaze.  Recently signed to Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records.  It’s got more bounce to the ounce than your average indie band.  The best part is they avoid the current trend of sounding like they’re playing to the hipster ‘tweens set.

Standout Track: Solitary Gun, Permalight

Recommended If You Like: Wilco, Death Cab For Cutie, Spoon

Purchase ‘Permalight’ by Rogue Wave on iTunes – Download

(13) Fences – Self-Titled – Thoughtful singer/songwriter with a clear punk background.  Best comparison would be to Chris Carrabba finally accepting high school is over and starting to tackle actual big kid problems.

Standout Track: The Same Tattoos, Girls With Accents, From Russia With Love

Recommended If You Like: Death Cab For Cutie, Elliott Smith, Dashboard Confessional

Purchase ‘Fences’ by Fences on iTunes – Download

(12) Angie Mattson – Skeleton Arm – Hauntingly ethereal down home blues.  Surprisingly un-L.A. sounding.  I had the honor of playing with her in Philadelphia this past October and the record has been on repeat ever since.  If you like the theme song to “True Blood” and the female singer/songwriter aesthetic this is for you.

Standout Track: Cool Water, Mississippi

Recommended If You Like: Glasser, Bat For Lashes, Fiona Apple

Purchase ‘Skeleton Arm’ by Angie Mattson on iTunes – Download

(11) MGMT – Congratulations – A lot of people hated on this album and said it wasn’t as good as ‘Oracular Spectacular’…I disagree.  Oracular Spectacular may have been poppier but this album shows a lot of growth in terms of musicianship…and its druggier.

Standout Tracks: It’s Working, Flash Delirium, Siberian Breaks

Recommended If You Like: Passion Pit, Vampire Weekend, LSD

Purchase ‘Congratulations’ by MGMT on iTunes – Download

(Honorable Mention) Bear Hands – Burning Bush Supper Club – This was a hard album to leave off the list.  I’ve been a big fan of these Brooklyn boys for about two years.  I think the reason it didn’t make my actual list is because I got the album late in the game and I think I still like their “Golden EP” more.  However, I can definitely see that changing as I get more familiar with BBSC.

Standout Tracks: Crime Pays, What A Drag, Can’t Stick Em

Recommended If You Like: Yeasayer, MGMT, Passion Pit

Purchase ‘Burning Bush Supper Club’ by Bear Hands on iTunes – Download

What To Do This Weekend (10-21-10)

In Concerts,Rich,What To Do This Weekend on October 21, 2010 by Two Barbers Tagged: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

2010 CMJ Festival

Every October, the music industry descends on Manhattan and Brooklyn to determine who’s going to be the next big thing.  It’s about that time of the year again, and this weekend’s ‘What To Do’ post will give you a heads up on some performances that will be worth checking out.

Friday

  • Me First and the Gimme GimmesA collaboration of pop punk legends covering ridiculous songs in a deceptively appropriate pop-punk fashion. (7 PM – Rocks Off Concert Cruise Series).
  • This ConditionInfectious pop rock in the vein of the All American Rejects.  You’re guaranteed to leave this show with a smile on your face and a slightly more positive outlook then you walked in with. (7:50 PM – The Delancey).
  • Bad RabbitsBoston Hip Hop funksters.  I caught these guys in Hoboken last year and have been spinning their Stick-Up kids EP ever since.  Parliament Funkadelics meets Travie McCoy. (8 Pm – Purevolume House).
  • Atomic Tom – Watch this video.  Enough said. (10 PM – Arlene’s Grocery).
  • Bear Hands – Brooklyn hipsters that are more concerned with writing catchy tunes than being cooler than you (which in turn probably makes them cooler than you).  Been diggin’ on these guys for a couple of years now.  (12 AM – Bowery Electric).
  • Nada Surf – Indie rock royalty that somehow managed to keep their street cred despite how popular they got. (1 AM – Mercury Lounge).  Forgive that pun please…

Saturday

  • HelmetRemember these guys? (8 PM – Gramercy Theatre).
  • The KickDrums – Rza approved indie kids from B(c)rooklyn.  A lot better than that description makes them out to sound. (9:40 PM – Le Poisson Lounge).
  • The TweesEqual parts The Strokes and The Walkmen.  This is currently one of my favorite bands (mostly because they remind me of sneaking into the city to go see those bands 10 years ago). (10:15 PM – The Charleston).
  • Surfer Blood – Florida low-fi kids make a stop in NY before heading to Europe.  Great way to end your CMJ weekend (1 AM – Bowery Ballroom).
